Following the organization of the last edition of the European Theater Union Festival in 2008, after a break of 11 years, the Cluj-Napoca State Hungarian Theater will once again host the prestigious event. The European Theater Union (UTE - L’Union des Théatres de l’Europe) was founded in 1990 on the initiative of director Giorgio Strehler, the legendary director of the Piccolo Teatro in Milan and Jack Lang, a French politician, Minister of Culture and then Minister of Education. The Cluj-Napoca State Hungarian Theater became a member of the organization, which currently has 34 members, in 2008, and elected Gábor Tompa and the director of the theater in May 2018 at the general assembly of the Union in Budapest.

The Union, which brings together theaters and actors, promotes innovative theatrical cooperation and exchanges of experience between nations. Its key objectives include preserving and passing on Europe's cultural heritage by providing a forum for international productions, supporting the individual and collective work of young artists, meeting their more experienced professionals and participating in projects that critically analyze political and social issues.

The twelve-day festival in the second half of November will feature performances by 15 member theaters and individual members, including great artists such as Armin Petras, Gabriele Vacis, Simos Kakalas, Andrei Șerban, Giorgio Barbiero Corsetti, Marco Solari and Alessandra Vanzi, Boris Liješević & nbsp; Yannis Leontaris, Nuno Cardoso, Frank Hoffmann, Botond Nagy, Silviu Purcărete, Margarita Mladenova, Gábor Tompa, Ferenc Sinkó, Michal Dočekal, Klim Kozinsky, Enikő Eszenyi, Yvonne Jansen and Rafael Sanchez.

The main sponsors of UTE FEST are the Ministry of Culture and National Identity, the Gábor Bethlen Fund, and the Mayor's Office and City Council of Cluj-Napoca.
